Dating to c.1835 for the gold and amethyst elements and c.1900 for the 15k gold chain, this necklace is proof that some marriages are made in Heaven!
This magnificent necklace began its long life as a pair of late-Georgian earrings and a brooch, but they were "re-purposed" c.1900 into the fabulous necklace you see here, and the effect is simply gorgeous! Wrought from 15k yellow gold, this superb jewel boasts natural amethysts with marvelous repousse work and hand-engraving for a one-of-a-kind jewel that is splendid enough for a trip down the red carpet!
The main element of the necklace measures 2" wide x 1 3/8" at it's widest point, and features three stunning, natural, rich purple amethysts set in a fantasy framework of acanthus scrolls, leaves, and florets! The largest rectangular stone takes center stage, measures 19 mm x 9 mm x 5 mm and weighs a calculated 6.21 carats. This rectangular step-cut stone is a rarity in jewelry of this date, and it also has natural zoning in the center which gives it an even more fascinating optical effect! This gem is framed by two oval amethysts measuring 10 mm x 8 mm x 4 mm, and weighing a calculated 2.35 carats each. All three amethysts are crimp-set in open-backed collets of 15k gold, and all of the amethysts are beautifully-matched for color.
Suspended from two lengths of gold chain we have the two lovely drops, one set slightly above the other in the negligee style of c.1900. The drops measure 1" long x 5/8" at their widest points. Each drop holds a pear-cut amethyst measuring 13mm x 10 mm x 6.7 mm and weighing a calculated 4.15 carats each. This adds up to just over 20 carats of vibrant, hand-cut amethysts! The drops are set identically to the others, and have a wonderfully three-dimensional quality. Best of all, this is a one-of-a-kind necklace which looks smashing on the neck! Whomever made this conversion did an expert job; they added a 16" 15k yellow gold chain, and in doing so, gave this brooch and earring demi-parure a new lease on life!
Weighing in at 12.45 grams, this late Georgian-meets-Art Nouveau necklace has made it into the 21st-century fresh-as-a-daisy condition, without repairs or replacements. If you love the best in either Georgian or Art Nouveau jewelry, this necklace belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a stellar holiday gift for any lady fond of the best in antique amethysts and gold, and will be shipped in a gift box.
