Webster's Dictionary defines a "masterpiece" as "a work done with extraordinary skill or artistic achievement." I have been fortunate enough lately to acquire several jewels which meet this criteria, and I am proud to present the "Masterpiece collection" for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
Dating to c.1860, these magnificent earrings is a fabulously-wearable Victorian rarity which will always be in high style! Measuring 1 1/2" from the tops of their ear wires, 1 1/8" x 1 1/8" in diameter, and 3.6 mm thick, these incredibly gorgeous earrings translate perfectly into the modern woman's jewelry wardrobe, and were made by the Vatican workshop jewelers! Their size, rarity, exceptional condition, and craftsmanship all qualify this pair of jewels for Masterpiece status!
Wrought from solid 18k yellow gold with a matte bloomed finish, these earrings epitomize all that is so wonderful about jewelry made in the Vatican workshop! They boast large, beautifully-figured natural Italian coral cabochons measuring 15 mm in diameter. The coral cabochons are set in a rope-edged, closed-backed mounting of 18k gold (Vatican workshop hallmark; tested). At the corners of the earrings, tiny red, white and blue tessarae accents lend just the right splash of color, and complete these elegant jewels. (Micromosiac jewelry was actually invented at the Vatican workshop in the 17th century, and this intricate form and technique is associated with Vatican-made items.) These earrings are notable for their luscious coral cabs; a real rarity in Victorian Grand Tour jewelry!
These earrings have made it into the 21st-century in magnificent condition, with no repairs or replacements after over 155 years! They retain their original elongated kidney wires and hooks, and both earrings are stamped with the Vatican hallmark of crossed keys above a mitre, the touch mark for the Papal States workshops from 1815-1870. The only sign of wear to these beauties are a couple of tiny tessarare losses on one earring; this is invisible without the aid of a loupe, and is considered acceptable wear in a pair of earrings which have witnessed over a century and a half of history. Otherwise, these earrings are as fresh as when they first graced the ears of a lady of wealth and fashion taking the Grand Tour of Italy in the early 1860s! Vatican-made earrings are also incredibly rare; most surviving pieces of Vatican workshop consist of brooches and pendants. These earrings are the finest of the era that this dealer of 25+ years has ever seen, and are truly museum-worthy!
Weighing in at 15.53 grams for the pair, these are substantial earrings with a phenomenal history, and best of all, they look fantastic on the ear! These glamorous yet tailored jewels will take you from the office to the opera in high Victorian style, and also represent a wonderful investment opportunity or the serious collector. If you collect the ULTIMATE in Grand Tour jewelry, these Vatican wonders belong in your collection! They would also make a generous holiday gift for any lady who cherishes the finest in Victorian jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box.
