Dating to c.1870 for the cameo and c.1915 for the gold brooch frame and findings, this cameo depicts the Virgin Mary, and comes right in time to light up your Christmas!
Measuring 1 7/8" long x 1 1/2" wide, this Italian bull's-mouth shell cameo boasts a magnificently-carved image of the Virgin Mary as a beautiful but sorrowful young woman. The Virgin faces right, her head bent in contemplation or prayer. She wears a hooded robe, and her hair is tied back in a fillet. The Virgin's expression is so subtle, but so revealing; whomever carved this shell beauty was clearly a master! The entire image is almost marble-like in its exquisite carving. Best of all, this cameo is in untouched condition after over 145 years!
I believe that one of the reasons that this cameo is in such fine condition is that it was not framed until c.1915. Often, cameos such as these were purchased unmounted on the Grand Tour of Italy, and kept in curiosity cabinets, which would have several of these works of art on display. The cameo was custom-framed in a 10k gold frame with a 14k pin and early safety clasp (both marked "10K" and "14K" respectively.) This brooch has survived another century to come down to us in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for! Even seen under bright light, there are no age cracks or hairlines. SIMPLY SUBLIME!
Weighing in at 10.82 grams, this cameo brooch lights up anything you wear it with, and looks superb on a sweater or lapel! If you collect the best in Victorian cameos, this Italian Madonna belongs in your collection! It would also make a stellar Christmas gift for any lady fond of antique devotional jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this beatific jewel; up to 30-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
