Dating to c.1825-1835, this beautiful late-Georgian necklace is a paste- and pinchbeck-lover's dream come true, and comes just in time for the consideration of my holiday shopping Ruby Lane clientele!
Measuring a grand 2" long without the large pendant bail x 1 7/8" wide, this vibrant jewel has survived over 185 years in magnificent, all-original condition, and is one of the most GORGEOUS examples of Georgian-era paste jewelry to come my way this year! Aquamarine paste is highly desirable, and getting extremely difficult to find at reasonable prices! This stunning jewel is set with four large pastes weighing approx. 8 "carats" each, as well as four smaller pastes weighing approx. 2 "carats" each. These stones are the most delicious shade of sky blue, with just a hint of pale green; this is the color of the FINEST natural aquamarines! All of the stones are magnificently hand faceted above and below for maximum fire, and all are claw- and collet-set into open-backed pinchbeck frames.
Pinchbeck is the gold substitute invented by Sir Christopher Pinchbeck c.1720. Genuine pinchbeck boasts the color and heft of 20k gold, but does not wear through like rolled gold or gold-filled jewelry. So successful was this alloy of 87% copper and 13% zinc, that the "recipe" for this alloy was kept a family secret for generations. The invention of the electroplating process in 1840 sounded the death knell for this alloy, as it was far less expensive to produce. Today, pinchbeck jewelry has become collectible in its own right!
This pendant has been fitted with a gold filled bail large enough to accommodate your thickest pinchbeck muff chain /guard or Victorian gold chain, adding another 5/8" of length to the pendant. (I have also added a high-quality 18" Edwardian gold filled chain for instant wearability as my gift to you!) Best of all, this pendant is in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for, without any chips or scratches to the stones, or losses to the setting! This shimmering necklace comes just in time to light up your holiday festivities, and is a classic Georgian jewel that you will wear again and again! SO LOVELY!
If you love the finest in Georgian paste jewelry, this necklace belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for any lady who cherishes the best in early jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this regal rarity; I do not expect to find another, up to 30-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
