SPRING SALE! The FINEST Antique Jewelry on Ruby Lane for 21 Years! Layaways Available! I Ship Overseas!
Dating to c.1200 for the mercury-gilded ring and 100 AD for the Roman intaglio, this rare ring is a Turkish delight that represents 2000 years of jewelry history!
Wrought from bronze gilded with high-karat gold, this magnificent ring was made in Anatolia (modern day Turkey) at the opening of the 13th century! This ring would have been made for a medieval Turkish lady or gentleman of means, and is a beautiful example of a rarely-seen ring form! Measuring 5/8" x just a hair over 3/8" across the bezel, this ring is suitable for wear by either a lady or a gentleman today, and holds a stunning ancient Romano-Egyptian hard stone intaglio of a winged ibex!
The image is carved into the carnelian seal, and displays an ibex in full stride, or perhaps full flight, as this ibex has a pair of wings! This imagery shows Egyptian influence, as the ibex was worshipped by the Ptolomaic-era Egyptians. The intaglio is set into a cone-shaped bezel, and is 100% intact, without cracks or damage. During the last centuries of the Ottoman Empire, Roman-era gems were set into contemporary rings for high-standing members of society, and this example is as fine as any I have seen in my 25+ years as a collector, dealer and scholar of early jewelry!
The ring is a tour-de-force in itself; it boasts a polygonal bezel which stands 3/8" proud of the shoulders, and displays magnificent openwork casting as well as hand engraving. Best of all, this ring is in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for; it is in all-original, wearable condition, and retains approx. 90% of its original high-karat gilding! This ring is a size 6 1/4, and cannot be re-sized. Weighing in at 5.01 grams, it is a substantial jewel which brings together the history of early Ottoman jewelers as well as the Roman glyptic arts! It makes a fabulous right-hand ring for a lady, or an impressive pinky ring for a gentleman!
If you cherish the best in Ottoman Empire or ancient Roman jewelry, this impressive ring belongs on your hand and in your collection! It would also make a stellar holiday gift for anyone fond of the best in early jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box. As with all of my ancient jewelry, this ring will be sold with a COA and valuation for your insurance records at no extra charge. Do not miss this rarity; up to 60-day layaway is available on this item, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
