Dating to c.1825-1835, this late-Georgian ruby and pearl ring is a wearable wonder mounted in high-karat gold!
Measuring 5/8" x 1/2" across the bezel, this is one of the finest Georgian-era rings I have come across in quite a while! This example is completely hand-wrought from 20k yellow gold, and has made it into the 21st-century in as pristine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for (all gold unmarked but tested! The star of this ring is the oval-shaped blood red ruby, which measures 6.5 mm x 4.1 mm and weighs a calculated 80 points. Surrounding this brilliant natural gemstone are seven split pearls measuring an average of 3-3.5 mm each.
All of the gems are set in the rubbed-over, pushed-up closed-backed mountings so typical of the early 19th-century. The shoulders of the ring are gorgeously hand-engraved with sprigs and acanthus leaves, tapering to a plain hoop. Not only is this ring of the highest craftsmanship, it looks like it was hardly ever worn! It is in stellar, all-original condition, with no damage, repairs or replacements after 185 years!
This ring is currently a size 5 3/4, but the rear of the shank is plain enough for easy up-sizing by a good lapidary; due to its great age and the presence of natural pearls, I would only have this sized by laser. This ring weighs a substantial 6.01 grams, and looks just as fresh today as when it was first worn by a lady of wealth and fashion c.1830, and represents a fine investment as well as a highly-wearable, historic ring!
This ring looks nothing short of fabulous on the hand, and WHAT a history! If you love the BEST in early jewelry, this high-karat ruby and pearl beauty belongs on your hand an in your collection! It would also make a fabulous holiday gift for any lady fond of the finest in antique ruby jewelry.
