Dating to c.1820, this fob seal is a superb example of late-Georgian jewelry with an armorial seal which is second-to-none!
Measuring 1 1/8" tall x 22 mm x 18 mm across the seal, this beautiful fob seal is suitable for wear by a lady or a gentleman, and boasts a deeply-cut carnelian armorial crest! Crafted from sterling-grade silver, this fob retains about 70% of its original high-karat gilding, and features a deeply chased and engraved handhold and base, but the real star here is the intaglio seal (all metals unmarked but tested)!
The crest is engraved with three lions rampant on a colored field, the color indicated by intricate hatch work. The crest is set into a very Rococo border of scrolls and scallop shells, and a lion rampant crowns the top of the crest. Lions are closely associated with the Scottish nobility; I have not researched this coat of arms, but with four lions present, it would have been the armorial of an important and deeply historic noble family! It would make a stellar research project for the new owner, or a wonderful jewel for the lion lover!
The seal is in 100% intact condition, and leaves a crisp impression after nearly 200 years (see the last photo)! I have dealt in Georgian-era fob seals for over 20 years, and this example is head and shoulders above most which have passed through my hands. Moreover, the provenance of this seal is from from the prestigious NY-based shop A La Vielle Russie; this card came with and will accompany the fob seal (although then dated to c.1810; my research indicates that the design is much more in keeping with a date of 1820.) SO STUNNING!
Weighing in at 12.91 grams, this fob seal can be worn as a pendant, or on a gentleman's watch chain; it has built up a rich patina over the past two centuries, but could easily be polished up by the new owner if he or she so desires. Alternatively, this seal would make a MOST impressive ring! If you collect the best in armorial seals, this example belongs in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for anyone fascinated with heraldry, and will be shipped in a gift box.
