Dating to c.1690-1700, this beautiful English fob seal is proof that great things can come in small packages, and can be worn as a historic pendant today by either a lady or a gentleman!
Measuring just 5/8" tall and 5/8" x 1/2" across the seal, this beautiful fob seal is wrought from sterling-grade silver, and boasts a cunning, three-dimensional handhold designed as a dolphin (silver unmarked but tested)! The dolphin is modeled in high detail, and has a wonderful armorial appearance, down to the individual scales on its body (during the 17th century, even scientists thought of dolphins as fish, and they were depicted as such)! The dolphin's tail forms the narrow bail on the top; just add a silver jump ring, and voila! A perfect pendant which will look splendid on a silver chain!
But wait; it gets even better! The seal boasts a hand-engraved intaglio of King William III of England dressed as Mars, the God of war! King William III of England reigned from 1688-1702, (first jointly with Queen Mary, then solely as King after Mary's death in 1694), and is best known for deposing the Catholic King James II in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. A Protestant, William participated in several wars against the powerful Catholic king of France, Louis XIV. Many Protestants heralded him as a champion of their faith. William's final victory at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 is still commemorated today by the Orange Order. This series of victories lends itself to the depiction of William as Mars; he faces left, wearing a military helmet and a Roman-style robe. The impression is still crisp after over three centuries, and the workmanship, considering its tiny size, is nothing short of fabulous!
Weighing in at 5.21 grams, this fob seal is a remarkable survival, and has made it into the 21st century in as fine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for. There are no repairs or damage, and the seal boasts a rich, early patina to the silver. Simply a highly-rare and desirable Stuart jewel, this fob seal represents an important era in English history, and I have never seen another! If you collect the best in pre-Georgian jewelry or British royal memorabilia, this fob belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for anyone fascinated with 17th-century English history, and will be shipped in a gift box.
