Dating to c.1890-1900, this Belle Epoque jewel makes a dream-worthy engagement or right hand dress ring, and it truly has all of the "bells and whistles!" The bezel of this ring measures a perfectly-proportioned 5/8" in diameter. A magnificent, cushion-cut natural Ceylon sapphire takes center stage here, and it is framed with a halo of old mine-cut diamonds for a classic look of luxury that will never go out of style! The sapphire measures 8.5 mm x 8.5 mm x 4.5 mm and weighs a calculated 2.61 carats!
I have had two graduate gemologists examine this stone, and both reported that it is completely natural! Moreover, there is no sign of heat treatment to this stone; this velvety deep royal blue color comes straight from Mother Nature! This gem is a heavenly hue, and displays the natural zoning found in untreated sapphires under magnification. JUST DREAMY!
The natural sapphire is an antique cushion cut, and is securely set with 12 long golden prongs in an open-backed mounting. The twelve old mine-cut diamonds measure 2.5 mm, and each weighs approx. 12 points. That adds up to 1.44 carats of perfectly-matched diamonds, and a total gem carat weight of 4.05 carats! Each diamond is white and bright; as most collectors know, one cannot grade antique diamonds according to modern GIA standards, but these eye-clean gems are equivalent to I/J in color and VS2-SI1 in clarity. The diamonds are bead-set and claw-mounted, and all of the gems are set in a mounting of buttery 18k yellow gold with a pretty pierced basketwork setting underneath the bezel (marked "18," tested).
This ring is a size 8 1/2, and has never suffered re-sizing, but the plainness of the rear of the shank would allow easy re-sizing by a good bench jeweler at little cost. It is also in fabulous condition for its 120-year history, and looks just as lovely today as when it first graced the hand of a lady of wealth and fashion in the 1890s!
Simply the MOST spectacular Victorian sapphire ring I have seen in many moons, this ring will be adored by whomever receives it, or better yet, treat yourself to this dazzling jewel!
