Dating to c.1890-1900, this beautifully-made emerald and high-karat gold ring is a Belle Epoque treasure!
Measuring a grand 1 3/8" long x 5/8" wide across the bezel, this splendid jewel is a custom-made beauty crafted from the finest materials available to the late 19th-century lapidary, and will make you feel like a Queen every time you wear it! Wrought from solid 15k yellow gold with a 22k wash, one might be forgiven for thinking that this ring was originally converted from a larger piece of jewelry, but it isn't; it has always been a regal ring, and was likely custom-made for a lady of great wealth and fashion in the 1890s (gold unmarked but tested)!
I adore this ring for so many reasons; it is superbly cast and finished by hand, the Rococo revival design is an absolute delight, and it is set with one of the finest emeralds I have seen in a ring of any date! The Colombian emerald solitaire measures 6 mm x 4.5 mm x 4.8 mm and weighs a calculated .80 carat. This emerald is a stunning shade of rich grass green with the blue undertones which are characteristic of the finest Colombian emeralds. Unlike most emeralds of this date, this example has fabulous clarity as well as the natural "jardin" inclusions which one expects to find in these untreated precious stones!
The emerald is securely mounted in an open-backed collet. Above and below, exquisite scrolls, scallop shells, acanthus leaves, and keyhole-shaped openwork all add up to one unsurpassable jewel which is certain to get compliments galore! The shoulders of the ring are forked, tapering back to a fluted shank. (The ring guard you see in the photos was on the ring when it came in, and can easily be removed.) As this jewel is not hallmarked, I believe it was a commissioned piece which never left its country of origin, and did not require assay marks. Best of all, it has survived the past 115 years in all-original, pristine condition, with no repairs, re-sizing, or replacements!
This ring is a size 6 1/2 without the ring guard, which brings it down to a size 5 1/2. It could easily be made larger by a good lapidary, but I would advise only sizing it by laser, so that the fluted design on the shank is retained. Weighing in at 5.51 grams, this late-Victorian wonder will be the only ring you want for that special formal event, and I never expect to find another like it! If you collect the NE PLUS ULTRA in fine antique jewelry, this ring belongs on your hand and in your collection! It would also make an outstanding gift for that special lady, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this luxurious beauty; up to 90-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
