Dating to c.1825-1835, these extra-long late Georgian earrings are a fabulous discovery!

Measuring 3 1/4" long from the tops of their replacement ear wires x 1/2" wide, these earrings are simply fascinating! When I first acquired this pair, I expected the filigree ball and gold cage work to be wrought from pinchbeck, but they actually tested to 12k yellow gold with a high-karat wash! These torpedo-style earrings epitomize all that is so wonderful about late Georgian-era jewelry; they are large in scale, superbly-crafted, and have just the right amount of Gothic Revival punch!

The earrings are topped with a cast and openwork filigree golden orb measuring 7 mm in diameter. Below, an ornate cage of gold caps a substantial drop of carved sponge coral which is invisibly drilled down the center. Sponge coral is a type of coral that has a spongelike appearance; when cut and polished, it displays bone-like channels visible under 10x magnification. The result of these channels is a wonderful mottled deep reddish-orange hue with lighter orange striations. I have only seen this type of coral used in jewelry of this period once or twice over my past 25+ years as a jewelry collector, dealer and scholar, and never in a pair of earrings! SO RARE!

The coral drops are also capped at the bottom with a hand-cut floret of 12k gold, and boy, do these earrings make a glorious statement on the ear! The workmanship is pure Georgian; the only replacement to these jewels are the gold-filled hook ear wires. Personally, I think these jewels deserve a better pair of karat gold findings, and I can acquire a pair of 14k gold lever backs for the new owner at cost if he or she so desires. Condition is excellent; there are no cracks or breaks to the intricate gold work, and the corals are intact. In fact, these jewels are as just as stately today as when they first graced the ears of a lady of fashion in the 1830s!

Weighing in at 18.62 grams for the pair, these earrings are not for the faint of heart, but will dress up anything you choose to wear them with, from blue jeans to a ball gown! They are perfect for the lady who loves her antique jewelry to make a grand statement, and would make a stellar holiday gift for anyone who loves the best in early torpedo earrings, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss them; they are priced for quick sale, up to 60-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
