SO RARE French Napoleon III Sterling Silver Snuff Box, Notre Dame Motif, 67.82 Grams, c.1845!
Dating to c.1840-1850, this French silver snuff box is certain to be at the top of any collectors Christmas wish list!
Measuring 3 1/4" long x 1 7/8" wide x 5/8" thick, this is one of the MOST exquisite examples of French silver that I have ever beheld! This large snuffbox is intricately hand-engraved with the Church of Notre Dame set against an ornate, Gothic Revival background of scrolls, arches, and flowers! The box opens to reveal a gilded interior, and boasts engine-turned engraving on the reverse.
When opened, one can see the hallmarks on the inner lip of the box for Paris (head of Mercury) as well as an intricate maker's mark which under 10x magnification appears to be the crowned initials "M.P." inside a cartouche with a crescent moon. These marks were too small to capture with my camera, but they are still crisp and readable under a 10x loupe after 170 years! This exquisite box also tests to sterling-grade silver.
Weighing in at a substantial 67.82 grams, this snuff box would have originally belonged to a French gentleman of wealth and fashion, and will make a stellar addition to any collection of Napoleon III silver or fine snuff boxes! This box has survived nearly two centuries in excellent condition; there are a few minor, shallow dents, but that is to be expected of a sterling silver box of this great age. I have set my price with this bit of wear in mind. This is also by far the earliest example to feature an engraving of Notre Dame that I have seen in my 10+ years as a Ruby Lane Platinum-level dealer!
If you collect the BEST in antique French silver or decorative arts, this beautiful Notre Dame box will make a thrilling addition to your collection! It would also m1ake a superb gift for any lady or gentleman fascinated with French history or the Church, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this rarity; I do not expect to find another, it is priced for fast sale, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
