Dating to c.1865-1875, this beautiful brooch features a micromosaic of the Lion of St. Mark set into a goldstone background, and comes just in time to compliment your New Year wardrobe!
Measuring 1 3/4" x 1 5/8", this lovely Grand Tour brooch is top quality, and head and shoulders above most Victorian micromosaics on the market today! The Lion of Saint Mark represents St. Mark the Evangelist (pictured in the form of a winged lion), and is the symbol of the city of Venice and the former of Republic of Venice. This plaque was very likely purchased in Venice by a wealthy lady taking the Grand Tour of Italy, and set into the brooch you see here when she returned home. Not only is this one of the prettiest subjects for a micro mosaic, the tesserae are smooth to the touch, an indication the best quality!
The winged lion is depicted standing on a green ground with one paw holding an open book. The tiles are so small and detailed that one can even see writing on the open pages of the book! The micromosaic measures just 1" in diameter, and is set into a plaque of shimmering goldstone. As with the finest Victorian micro mosaic jewels, the plaque is backed by a sheet of black shale. The frame is wrought from 9k gold (unmarked but tested) with a delicate rope work border. SO PRETTY!
Best of all, this brooch has made it into the 21-st century in all-original condition, with no losses to the tesserae or the frame! The reverse of the brooch retinas its original "T and C" clasp with a sterling silver pin which protrudes 1/4" past the brooch as a "keeper." This brooch has clearly been treasured over the past 140+ years, and shows only the gentlest wear. There are just a couple of minuscule nibbles to the border of the black ground, and a very mild surface scratch which can be seen in the photos; I only mention this for complete accuracy, as this is considered acceptable wear for a micro mosaic of this great age. There are no repairs or cracks. I love the combination of the earth tones of the lion against the goldstone background; this jewel looks wonderful worn on a lapel or a sweater! The brooch weighs in at 11.78 grams.
If you collect the BEST in Grand Tour micromosaic jewelry, this brooch belongs in your collection! This is the sort of jewel I would love to keep for my own collection, but one must pay the bills, so let me loss be your gain! This brooch would also make a stellar gift for any lady fond of the city of Venice, and will be shipped in a gift box. Do not miss this rarity; it is priced for quick sale, up to 30-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
