Dating to c.1900-1910, this exquisite ring boasts two early transitional cut diamonds in a crossover design which has transcended the whims of fashion!
The "toi et moi" (or "you and me") ring is a French design dating back to the late 19th-century, and has become a classic! The original romantic sentiment behind this jewel was that a diamond, pearl or other precious stone was set in a slight cross-over design to symbolize the love of two people. This elegant Edwardian example boasts two of the most fiery diamonds I have seen in a ring of these proportions, and really blazes on the hand!
The diamonds measure 4 mm and 3.7 mm, and weigh a calculated 33 points and 1/4 ct. respectively, adding up to over 1/2 carat of exquisite antique diamonds! The transitional cut pre-dated the modern brilliant cut by about 20 years; to the layman's eye, they look identical to modern brilliants, but there are subtle facet differences, as well as having a minuscule open culet much like the Old European cut diamonds, but even smaller. As most collectors know, one cannot judge antique diamonds according to the GIA standards of their modern descendants, but these diamonds are equivalent to F color and VS1 clarity!
What is odd to me is that these diamonds are not set in a higher-karat gold setting, but the 10k gold mounting is original to the ring, and the design is very typical of Edwardian "Toi et Moi" rings (gold unmarked but tested). Each diamond is securely held by six long, golden claws in a buttercup collet. This ring has not been cleaned, and boasts a rich, delectable "bloom" to the gold which only the passing of generations can impart. SO BEAUTIFUL!
This delightful jewel looks just as beautiful today as when it was first worn by a lady of wealth and fashion over a century ago, and is heirloom-quality! It is currently a size 6, but the plainness of the rear of the shank would allow for easy re-sizing by a good bench jeweler for little cost. If you collect the best in antique diamond jewelry, this ring belongs on your hand and in your collection! It would also make a wonderful gift for any lady fond of romantic diamond rings, and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for giving or storing. Do not miss this Edwardian beauty; it is priced for fast sale, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
