Dating to c.1875, this important Victorian diamond and high-karat gold serpent ring is suitable for wear by a lady or a gentleman!
Serpent-motif rings were popular throughout the 19th-century, as the serpent was associated with eternal love. This example is one of the most impressive I have had the pleasure to discover this season, and it is head and shoulders above most examples on the open market today! Measuring 5/8" at its widest point, this magnificent snake is wrought from 18k rose gold, and boasts a sinuous design, a triple hoop, and a large old mine-cut diamond set into the serpent's head (gold unmarked but tested)!
This serpent is depicted in "full coil," with its head draped over its body, and its tail tucked under its chin! The focal point here is the sizable old mine-cut diamond solitaire, which measures approx. 5.9 mm x 5.1 mm and weighs a calculated 85 points! This is just the hand-cut and hand-faceted sort of diamond I love to see; it is delightfully chunky, with a small table, open culet, and tons of weight on the crown! The diamond is set in a Roman-style, open-backed collet, so all you see is the flash of the diamond emanating from this impressive golden serpent!
As most collectors know, one cannot grade antique diamonds according to the GIA standards of their modern descendants. This diamond has superb clarity (equivalent to VS1) and has a fascinating, natural slight undertone of green which is ultra-rare! It looks magnificent against the rose-gold of the ring, and flashes deep fire from every direction! It is difficult to discern whether this diamond would be considered a light fancy color without removing it from the ring, but it is a fabulous stone, and certainly one-of-a-kind!
This ring is a size 6 1/4, and can only be re-sized by laser due to the complex construction of the ring. It makes a marvelous right-hand ring for a lady, or an impressive pinky ring for a gentleman, and is certain to get compliments galore! This ring looks just as stunning today as when it first graced the hand of a lady or gentleman of wealth and fashion over 130 years ago, and is in all original condition. It is oh-so-substantial, weighing in at 10.01 grams of 18k gold!
If you collect the NE PLUS ULTRA in Victorian jewelry, this sentimental serpent wants to coil around your finger and make its nest in your collection! It would also make the ultimate gift for any lady or gentleman fond of the finest in antique rings, and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for giving or storing. Do not miss this regal serpent; up to 60-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
