Dating to c.1840, this is one of the rarest pairs of earrings to have graced my Ruby Lane shop for some time!
Measuring 7/8" from the tops of their ear wires x 1/2" in diameter x 7 mm thick, these exquisite earrings are proof that great things can come in small packages! These lovely earrings represent the finest in high-Romantic sentimental jewelry; each holds a woven token of light ash brown hair set under a dome of polished rock crystal, and accented with a sky-blue Persian turquoise measuring 3 mm in diameter!
Beginning collectors might assume that all hair jewelry of the Georgian and Victorian eras were made as mourning pieces, but this could not be further from the truth. Family and friends often bestowed hair jewelry to their loved ones for sentimental reasons; from a father to his daughter, for instance, or a husband to his wife. These earrings have no sign of mourning about them; the bright blue turquoises actually represent life, and not death!
These earrings are exquisitely wrought in 15k yellow gold (unmarked but tested). The hair tokens are fitted with their original rock crystals, giving them extra depth and dimension. The earrings are closed at the back, as is to be expected in hair jewelry of this date and construction. Perhaps best of all, these earrings have survived 175 years in PRISTINE condition! It almost appears as if they were never worn; there are no scratches to the crystals, losses, or repairs! SIMPLY LOVELY!
Victorian hair jewelry is widely available, but early earrings such as these are incredibly hard to find, especially in this superb a condition! Weighing in at 3.38 grams for the pair, these earrings are suitable for day or evening wear, and are oh-so-pretty on the ear! If you collect the best in sentimental jewelry, these beauties belong in your collection! I have seen comparable earrings in fine antique jewelry shops priced at upwards of $900, but not in my shop; I got a good deal, so why shouldn't you? They would also make a wonderful gift for any lady fond of the finest in antique sentimental jewelry. Do not miss this rare pair; up to 30-day layaway is available, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
