Dating to c.100 AD for the intaglio and c.1810 for the mounting, this ring represents nearly 2000 years of glyptic history, and is suitable for wear by a lady or a gentleman!

Measuring 15 mm long x 11 mm wide, this Regency-era ring is set with an ancient Roman banded agate (NOT glass) intaglio depicting a winged Victory facing left, holding a bow and arrow! This in this case, the two-colored stone imitates an eye agate, which was a highly-prized gemstone in antiquity for its reputation of keeping away "the evil eye." The symbol of Fortuna is also an auspicious one, and paste intaglios of this date and quality rarely survive into the 21st-century!

The dome-shaped intaglio is set into a closed-backed bezel of 9kt yellow gold (all gold unmarked but tested). The back of the bezel is yellow gold, but the shank is rose gold, but I believe that this is original to the construction of the ring, which appears to be hand-wrought. The ring is currently a size 7 1/2, but the plainness of the rear of the shank would allow for easy re-sizing by a good bench jeweler for little cost. Both the intaglio and the setting are intact; there are a couple of dimples to the gold at the back of the bezel, but this is perfectly acceptable in jewelry of this great age, and is only mentioned for complete accuracy. The intaglio boasts a superb burial patina, with the fine surface crazing one expects to find in ancient gemstones. Please see the last photo for the impression of the intaglio.

Simply an outstanding example of Ancient Rome meets Regency England, this ring would make a fine right hand ring for a lady or a distinguished pinky ring for a gentleman! It would also make a stellar gift for anyone fond of the history of ancient Rome, and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for storing or giving. As with all of my items pre-dating 1700, this ring will be sold with a COA for your insurance purposes at no extra charge! Do not miss this outstanding ring; it is priced for fast sale, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
