Dating to c,1860-1870, this large and highly sculptural Etruscan revival penannular brooch is a high-Victorian jewel which sparkles with genuine diamonds and rubies!
Measuring 1 1/2" in diameter, this solid, sterling-grade silver gilt brooch was inspired by the excavation of the Etruscan treasure hoards of the 1860s, and is a historicist's dream come true! This double-sided pin is cunningly crafted, and offers twice the wearability! The ram's heads are hand-wrought using the lost wax process, which was incorporated into these ancient revival designs to enhance their authentic appearance. These three-dimensional heads are the focal point here, and they hold the pin securely between their noses! Just open the heads a tiny bit, and the pin is ready to thread through your favorite jacket lapel or sweater and fit right back into place!
But wait; it gets even better! When I first discovered this brooch, it held four small garnets which had seen much better days. This brooch deserved better, so I had my jeweler fit them with small white diamonds on one side, and natural rubies on the other! Although the gemstones are modern, they look just right, and these precious stones really "pop" against the gilded silver! The two diamonds measure 2 mm and weigh approx. 8 points each, and the rubies measure 3 mm and weigh approx. 10 points each. JUST STUNNING!
Save for the addition of these gemstones, this brooch is in 100% all-original condition, right down to its original safety chain, although the way in which this brooch fastens, you don't really need it! Weighing in at a substantial 12.35 grams, this brooch is one of the more impressive Victorian historical revival jewels to have come my way; it just proves that a jewel does not have to be wrought from high-karat gold to be doubly-impressive! Wear it with the rubies showing one day, and the diamonds the next; it is like two brooches in one!
Simply a wonderful example of Victorian jewelry made even more desirable by the glittering rubies and diamonds, this penannular brooch is a true rarity! If you collect the best in antique jewelry, this Victorian jewel belongs in your collection! It would also make a stellar gift for any lady fond of the finest in Etruscan revival jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for giving or storing. Do not miss it; it is priced for fast sale, and USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
