Dating to c.1880, this dazzling antique diamond solitaire ring would make any lady say "yes" to the Big Question, or makes a fabulous right hand ring!
Measuring 11 mm in diameter across the bezel, this all-original Victorian ring has made it into the 21st-century in magnificent condition, and holds a fabulous old mine--cut diamond measuring approx. 5.1 mm in diameter and weighing a calculated 1/2 carat! This is the sort of diamond I adore; as with all old mine cut diamonds, it is deliciously chunky, with the smaller table, weighty crown, and open culet which characterizes these early, hand-faceted stones!
As most collectors know, one cannot judge antique diamonds according to the GIA standards of their modern descendants, but this diamond is exceptionally white and eye-clean; its color would grade close to G (VERY white when the majority of antique diamonds average J/K/L in color), with VS1 clarity! There are no unsightly carbon spots here, even under 10x magnification! The diamond is mounted with eight long golden claws, and the 15k setting itself is nothing short of delectable (gold unmarked but tested)!
The elegant-yet-substantial, hand-wrought setting is oh-so-romantic, with scrollwork and cutwork details above and below! The high-karat gold is buttery-soft, and has built up a wonderful "bloom"which only the passing of generations can impart. This ring is a size 5 1/4, but the plainness of the rear of the shank would allow for easy re-sizing by a good bench jeweler for little cost.
Simply a stellar Victorian diamond solitaire, this jewel would make a fabulous engagement or anniversary ring, or simply a beautiful right-hand ring suitable for every day wear. Most dealers would price this ring at $1800+, but not in my shop; I got a good deal, so why shouldn't you?
