Dating to c.1650 for the outstanding double-sided enamel pendant, this necklace is a highly-desirable, museum-worthy devotional jewel!
Measuring 1" long x 3/4" wide with its tiny, incorporated bail, this 360+ year old pendant is a fabulously-wearable delight as well as an heirloom-worthy investment piece! The two hand-painted portraits of Jesus and the Virgin Mary are executed in opaque enamels on 22kt gold, and is framed with a fine 22kt gold pendant bezel (all gold unmarked but tested)! Best of all, this pendant has made it into the 21st-century without chips, damage or in painting, which is nothing short of remarkable!
In my 25+ years as a collector, dealer and scholar of antique and devotional jewelry, I have come across many enamel examples, but never one as untouched as this example, and never one on gold! Likely French or Italian in origin, this masterpiece of a pendant depicts Jesus with flowing chestnut-brown hair and a rather closely-trimmed "Van Dyke" mustache and beard. He has hazel eyes, and wears a red cloak over a blue robe, and the artist has made wonderful use of light and shadow in his depiction. Mary is depicted as a modest, blue-eyed young lady dressed in a white cowl and red robe, with a blue cloak over her head and shoulders. Both of the portraits are highly sophisticated, and were certainly painted by a skilled mid-17th century artist!
When I received this jewel of a pendant, I had my lapidary fit it with the 18" 10k gold necklace you see here; the end bail was removed, the pendant added, and the bail re-fitted. The result is an instantly-wearable treasure! Suitable for wear by a lady or a gentleman, this pendant is suitable for gentle everyday wear, but should be worn with care due to its great age and untouched condition. The total weight of the pendant and chain is 4.14 grams. SO HEAVENLY!
If you collect the ULTIMATE in pre-Georgian devotional jewelry, this pendant belongs around your neck and in your collection!
