Dating to c.1890-1900, this is a fantastic example of a custom-made Essex crystal jewel, and it is a delightfully-wearable pin!
Measuring just 1/2" in diameter x 2 1/4" long, this exquisite Essex crystal pin was designed by Robert Stoll, one of the late 19th-century's most renown makers of medals and sporting awards! This may have been Mr. Stoll's own personal piece, as he was the founder and president of the Winged Foot Association from 1887, and was an accomplished distance runner!
The rock crystal cabochon has been deeply carved and painted with a very three-dimensional red foot wearing a Roman-style sandal, with a white wing extending above. This jewel must have been sitting in a drawer for a century; it is in such splendid shape, and the crystal is immaculate! Best of all, it is signed on the reverse "Robert Stoll/12-16 Johns' St. NY," which was Stoll's retail address from the late 1890s-1900. How special is THAT?
This pin is wrought from 14k yellow gold, and is in 100% intact condition gold unmarked but tested). There is a bit of dirt where the crystal meets the back of the pin, but I choose not to clean my antique jewelry, as my clients value the age patina. Whether worn by a lady or a gentleman, this pin looks splendid on a lapel, and in my 25+ years as a collector, dealer and scholar of antique jewelry, I have never seen another like it!
If you collect the rare and unique in Essex crystal or sporting jewelry, this stunning pin belongs in your collection! It would also make a stellar holiday gift for any fan of track or antique jewelry, and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for giving or storing. Do not miss this one-of-a-kind rarity; it is priced for quick sale, and USPS Priority mail is FREE!
