Webster's Dictionary defines a "masterpiece" as "a work done with extraordinary skill or artistic achievement." I have been fortunate enough lately to acquire several jewels which meet this criteria, and I am proud to present the "Masterpiece collection" for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
Dating to c.1865-1875, this magnificent enamel on copper brooch is truly a Victorian Masterpiece! Measuring 1 5/8" long x 1 1/2" wide, this fabulous brooch boasts a hand-painted enamel on copper plaque of three frolicking cupids in a rocky mountain landscape with a magnificent dawning sky! One cupid lies sleeping on his yellow and blue robe, his quiver of bows at his side, while his two brothers hover over his sleeping form as if to play a trick on him in the midst of his dreams. Best of all, the palette of this painting is so ethereal; it anticipates the best work of the early 20th-century artist Maxfield Parrish!
The image is rendered in shades of pink, orange, yellow, blue, green, gray, white and brown with red highlights, and the plaque is in pristine condition after well over 150 years, with no chips, cracks, crazing or losses! It is framed in its original 18k matte gold frame, which displays intricate, hand-wrought rope work around the edge (gold unmarked but tested). The brooch retains its original "T and C" clasp, with the pin protruding 1/4" past the frame as a "keeper." SO MAGICAL!
This jewel has made it into the 21st century in as pristine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for; it appears as if it were rarely worn, and was certainly cherished over the generations. (The tiny black speck on the sleeping cupid's head is part of the enamel firing process; it is not damage. The enlarged photos make it appear visible, but it cannot be seen when the brooch is is worn.) Weighing in at 10.71 grams, this fine Victorian brooch lights up on a sweater or lapel, and the subject is one of a kind!
