Dating to c.1800-1810, this wonderful solid gold Georgian quizzing glass is a fashionably posh accessory, don't you know!
Suitable for wear by a lady or a gentleman, this exquisite quizzing glass measures a perfectly-proportioned 2 3/4" long x 1 1/4" across the diameter of the lens. This fine gold quizzing glass would have been perfect for peering at the Bon Ton riding in the park, or for spying on the new pretty lady or handsome gentleman in church! The Regency dandy would never allow himself to appear in public wearing spectacles, and his fashionable lady consort would rather have been caught dead than behind a pair of glasses. Quizzing glasses enabled close yet covert inspection of society whilst preserving the oh-so-important appearance of the upper-class voyeur!
This quizzing glass is significantly finer in quality than most available to collectors on the market today; its tailored shape is inspired by the minimalist Neoclassical movement of the era spanning c.1780-1810. Most of the quizzing glasses I have handled over the years have been more ornate affairs, with the profuse engraving associated with the 1820s and 1830s. This simply elegant quizzer looks oh-so-dashing worn on a black ribbon or gold chain around the neck, and is suitable for wear by a lady or a gentleman! The handle also swivels; another sign of exceptional quality!
Perhaps best of all, this early example is not gold cased, but solid gold! Although unmarked, it tests to 12k (held fast under 10k acid; faded after a moment under 14k), indicating a European origin. It is also the MOST luminous shade of rose gold! The optical lens is slightly beveled at the edge, and is free of scratches or chips. The lens is actually a reducing rather than a magnifying lens, and quite a strong one at that! The level of quality of the gold mount and the fine reducing lens leads me to think that this was custom-made piece commissioned for a lady or gentleman of wealth and fashion rather than a pre-made stock example!
All of the fashion magazines are touting menswear for ladies this season, and this posh quizzer will look oh-so-elegant with your special suit or more tailored outfits! Weighing in at 13.06 grams, this splendidly-made quizzing glass is quite substantial, and in as pristine a condition as the most discerning collector could hope for! PIP PIP and HURRAH!
If you love the stylish elegance of Georgian quizzing glasses, this example is a top of the line example! It would also make a splendid gift for the spiffy Anglophile in your life, and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for keeping or giving this historic jewel. Do not miss this golden treasure of a quizzer; these rarely survive in solid karat gold, and it is priced for fast sale. And remember, USPS Priority shipping is always FREE!
