Dating to c.1840-1850, this lovely Victorian brooch features a colorful enamel painting of Romeo and Juliet!
Measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/4", this brooch is likely Swiss in origin, and is hand-painted in enamels on a black glass ground. The subject is Romeo and Juliet, and the star-crossed lovers are colorfully painted with the all of the detail and folky charm I associate with mid-19th century Swiss enamels! This sentimental subject perfectly befits the Romantic era in which it was crafted, and is a delight to behold and to wear!
Juliet wears a Romantic-era interpretation of a gown cut in Renaissance style, with a yellow under dress with long sleeves, a pink overdress with puffed sleeves, and a blue petticoat. She wears black slippers, and her brown hair is worn in curls at the sides of her face and braided into a topknot. (Actually, she is the very image of an provencal 1830s fashion plate!) Romeo wears a theatrical Renaissance costume, with a red hat with a white plume, a green cape, white collar, purple doublet and breeches, and yellow sleeves and hose! He wears a sword by his side, and he smiles shyly as he approaches Juliet. The young lovers stand in a grassy landscape, with their shadows etched in brown - a very nice detail!
The painting is executed in enamels on a black glass ground, and the plaque is framed in sterling silver (unmarked but tested). This brooch is in mint condition after well over 165 years; it is just as fresh today as when it was worn by a fashionable lady in the 1840s! There is no damage whatsoever to the plaque or the images, and the silver frame retains its original "T and C" clasp. JUST DELIGHTFUL!
Simply a fine example of early Victorian jewelry with a rare subject, this brooch lights up on a sweater or a lapel! The colors are vibrant and fresh, and the images are simply charming. If you collect the best in Victorian jewelry, this brooch will make a wearable addition to your collection! It would also make a romantic holiday gift for your very own "lady fair," and will be shipped in a gift box suitable for storing or giving.
