Dating to c.1780-1790, this skillfully-painted watercolor on card of a lovely young girl is a superb example of a Georgian portrait miniature!
Measuring 1 3/4" x 1 3/8" sight size and 2 1/2" x 3" in its original ornate copper-gilt frame, this beautiful painting features a very appealing subject, and is the first of a small collection of English miniatures that I will be listing over the next week. A young lady of perhaps 16 years old faces left, and is painted in profile to the minutest detail in a delightful palette. This fresh-faced beauty has an alabaster complexion, rosy cheeks, and piercing grey eyes, but her crowning glory is her abundant dark auburn hair, which she wears flowing in natural waves over her shoulders and held off her forehead with a leafy pink rose!
This sitter is dressed at the height of fashion for the mid-1780s; she wears a high-waisted, pastoral blue and white striped muslin gown with a falling vandyke ruffled collar. A strand of pearls is her only jewelry, as befitted a very young lady of the era. She stands in an verdant outdoor setting with a blue sky and shadows that suggests a setting sun. What charms me about this image is the artists fantastic attention to detail; he or she clearly had some academic training, as the tendrils of the girl's hair and the folds in her gown are wonderfully executed, and the use of light and shadow is used to excellent effect!
This young lady was obviously from a well-to-do family, and this portrait has survived over 225+ years in all-original condition. Simply a little jewel of a miniature, this portrait retains its original glazing and copper-gilt frame, and is securely backed by oiled card with a black and gold brocade effect, likely also original. The top of the frame has been drilled for suspension.
This beautiful miniature will add charm and history to any decor! It would look lovely in a cabinet, on a small easel on a lady's dresser, or hung on the wall with other early miniatures. If you collect the best in 18th-century or early portraits, this pretty Georgian-era beauty belongs in your collection! Do not miss her, she is priced for quick sale, and USPS shipping is FREE!
