Dating to c.1800-1810, this fabulous high-karat and pearl locket comes from my own collection of fine Regency-era jewelry, but I rarely wear it, so it is time to offer it for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
I originally purchased this locket about 10 years ago because it literally had my name on it - well, my initials, anyway! This is the sort of jewel that one rarely sees offered on the open market today; it is crafted from the finest materials available to the early 19th-century lapidary, and has survived into the 21st century in a superb state of preservation!
Measuring 1 1/2" long x 7/8" wide x 5 mm thick, this lover's pendant has all that the most discerning collector could desire! The pendant is completely crafted in 22k gold (unmarked but tested). The center of the brooch boasts a rock crystal cabochon, beneath which the initials "JB" are wrought in elegant script with tiny seed pearls over a blue-violet enamel ground! The crystal is surrounded by 17 natural pearls measuring 2.5 mm each. The frame of the pendant is an fantasy of hand-spun gold cannetille rosettes, beadwork and filigree, and is set with six additional pearls. SO GORGEOUS!
But wait - it gets even better! The reverse of the locket is set with a swatch of dark brown hair! The hair is braided and set beneath glass. The only - and I mean only - sign of wear to this jewel is that the glass on the back has sustained a hairline crack. This could easily be replaced for little cost, but glass is stable and in no danger of falling out; I mention this only for accuracy. It was like this when I purchased it, and did not bother me a bit. Any specks you see in the photo are from my camera, and not the crystals.
It is clear to me that this is a sentimental jewel, likely given to a lady by her husband or a near relation. There is no sign of mourning about this jewel; rather, it celebrates life with its bright high-karat gold, pearls and lovely enamel work! This jewel is so precious; it is 100% all original, and there is not a bead or a wire out of place! It weighs in at a substantial 11.2 grams, and most of that is pure 22k gold!
If you collect the ULTIMATE in fine Georgian era jewelry, this locket belongs around your neck and in your collection! Your initials do not have to be "JB" to adore this masterpiece! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady fond of the best in Regency-era jewels. This item will be shipped in a gift box suitable for giving or storing this treasure.
