Dating to c.1880-1890, this pendant brooch is a wonderfully wearable, top-quality jewel which celebrates Nature's bounty!
Measuring 1 7/8" long x 1 3/8" wide, this is a substantial Victorian brooch with a luscious subject! It is completely painted by hand in enamels, and displays a wonderful still life of purple and green grapes, ripe peaches, and pink roses! This is not your average painted brooch; whoever painted this was an academically trained artist, and the details are superb, as are the use of light and shadow!
Weighing in at 16.1 grams, this lovely jewel is framed in 9k rose gold (unmarked but tested). The gold mounting is quite substantial, and has a finely twisted gold rope border. In all-original condition, this piece shows minimal wear for its 125+ year history; the image is free from cracks or chips, and the frame and gold findings are intact. The only sign of its great age is a minuscule hairline rub to the paint at the bottom of the background at the 5:00 position; this is only mentioned for complete accuracy, and is not visible when the brooch is worn. Nevertheless, I have taken this bit of wear into consideration when setting my price.
The reverse of the brooch is backed with gold at either side so as to protect this wonderful work of art, and the "T and C" pin boasts the earliest form of fold-over safety clasps, which were first patented in 1882. There is also a loop at the top of the brooch, so it can also serve as a pendant!
This is one of the best painted brooches I have seen in a decade; the juicy grapes and peaches look so real that you want to bite into them! Best of all, this is a classic subject that will never go out of style. It looks smashing worn on a lapel or a sweater, or worn as a pendant on a fine gold chain. If you love the best in Victorian artwork, this jewel belongs in your collection! I really wanted to keep this piece for my own collection, but one cannot keep it all! Do not miss this delectable jewel!
