This is a fabulous hand woven Wool tapestry "L'AUTOMNE et L'HIVER" (Autumn and Winter) from the "Spring/Summer-Fall/Winter" Series by Jean Picart Le Doux (French 1902-1982). (Woven signature on bottom right)
Jean Picart Le Doux is known as one of the most prolific tapestry designers of the 20th Century...his works are highly collectible and have graced the walls of Museums, public buildings, and Ocean Liners of the Art Moderne Era.
Depicting the Bright Sun and the Grapes of Fall; the Cold Sun, Snow and Bare Branches of Winter, with Greek symbols in the Sun. This series is represented in all of the reference books on Jean Picart Le Doux.
Loom Woven by the French Aubusson Atelier of "Simone Andre" in the 1960's (hallmark woven in on the bottom left of the tapestry), it has a separately woven "#6/8" (or possibly it is 8/9??) attached to the back.(see Photo, and see Photos of the reverse showing the weaving strands)
In 1945 Jean Lurcat, with the artists Marc Saint-Saens & Jean Picart Le Doux, founded the Association of Tapestry Cartoon Painters, which pioneered the Aubusson Revival of Tapestry as modern architectural Decor, and revived the Aubusson Weaving Ateliers after the devastations of WWII.
The size is approx. 81"wide x 60"tall...a good wall hanging size above a Mid Century Moderne Sofa or Console Table. ....there is a rod pocket sewn on the top edge of the back.
This tapestry is in immaculate condition....and a Rare small production. A fabulous original Tapestry to enhance your home!!
