This Japanese AWAJI Pottery Dragon Vase is quite wonderful! Produced in Japan CA.1900-1910, in a "stoneware" type body.
The Dragon stands out in full relief from the body of the Vase, and he is curved around and guarding what looks like a "lidded pot", or is it a Pearl?? Although he appears to be smiling, his hooded eyes are quite foreboding!!
His scales and tail spikes are very well done, and a wicked pair of "horns" extend backward from his skull!
The size is approx.9.5" tall x 9" diameter.
The combination of the dark blue glaze dripping down over the Teal Blue Glaze is a nice contrast, and the clouds in relief are floating below the dragon.
The vase is in excellent condition but for a bottom inner rim chip that probably happened when pulled out of the kiln (see photo), and a small glaze repair that was done in the factory where one of the Dragon's body segments were joined together (see photo).
A dynamic example of this Awaji Pottery....
