This handsome original Bronze by American Sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973) features a charming scene of a Mother Lioness caressing and feeding her cubs, produced by her in the early 20th Century, and Cast by Gorham Foundry.
The reclining Lioness is scrubbing the one Cub with her Tongue, while the other Cub is snuggled to her breast.
Signed by the artist and also stamped "Gorham Foundry" along with the #24, it is in a rich dark Brown Patina. The size is approx. 6" long by 4"deep.
Huntington is a highly acclaimed Artist and was known as being New York City's most prominent Woman Sculptor. She studied with Boston portrait sculptor Henry Hudson Kitson. She is recognized as one of America's finest animaliers, whose naturalistic works helped to bridge the gap between the traditional styles of the 1800s and the abstract styles of the mid-twentieth century. Her prominence also enabled other female artists to succeed.
Her first one-woman show was held at the Boston Arts Club. It consisted of 40 animal sculptures. She produced many large Public Works, and is represented in Museums around the world.
There is a Custom Giltwood Base with Title Plate that is included with this Bronze, which displays the figure very well. A photo shows the underside of the Bronze, with an old green felt attached by someone in the past....this was added to prevent scratching the surface of a table it was set on.
Another wonderful Bronze from our collection...by a well listed American Woman Sculptor...
