This is a large, well detailed and Rare Antique Match Safe or Vesta, in the shape of a Horse's Head. His Nostrils are Flared and his Ears are pinned Back...with fully dimensional right and left side.
He was crafted of silvered brass/bronze, during the 1870-1890 period, when Gents carried these fanciful figural Vestas to impress their friends! This Safe is large enough to hold the old Kitchen Matches. The Oval hatch at the back is also the Striker. The size is approx. 3" long and 1.25" tall by 1"wide.
It shows a rich Patina, and some Chasing work added after its casting...excellent detail in the hair on the cheeks, raised veins before the Nose, and an open Mouth. The condition is Excellent, with only a bit of "greening" below the hinge where it was attached...the hinge is very tight.
This Vesta is not to be confused with later copies, which were made in Sterling Silver, and are all much later reproductions of this Victorian one.
A fabulous example for your Vesta collection, or for the Equestrian collector..please view the other Antique Match Safes or Vestas I have listed today....
