Figural Dagger in Bronze,"Liberty" or "Marianne",French Political Symbols, CA.1860
A fabulous and very Rare Figural French Dagger in Bronze, with its original Leather Scabbard mounted with gilded Political Symbols, Cast CA.1860.
The Figural Handle depicts "Liberty" or "Marianne" holding the "Phrygian Cap" and clutching a Wreath for Peace. She stands on Papal Symbols, with her Left Foot Crushing a Bishop's Crown!! Excellent Symbolisms for France....I have put her age at about 1860, but she might be a tad bit earlier.
The Original Leather Sheath is mounted in gilt Bronze with a "Fasces" Symbol of Power, Justice and Unity, and has gilt decorations down the center.
She is approx. 9" when in the Sheath....approx. 4.5"long Blade...all in Excellent condition, with just a tiny bit of darkening on the "extremely SHARP Blade!! The point on the tip is fine and sharp also...be careful if you purchase this Dagger!!
In Revolutionary France the Liberty or "Phrygian Cap" became a popular Symbol...in the Spring of 1790 it was initially depicted with the Goddesses "Liberty and Nation"....later this Phrygian Cap became the Symbol of French National Heritage!
To this day the National Emblem of France - "Marianne" - is shown wearing a Phrygian Cap..the sign of the "Enlightened" and a Symbol of "Liberty"
This Rare Bronze Dagger was possibly owned by a Lady who was very "Political" and "Enlightened"... as we all should be!!
A very Unique and Rare item for your collection...be it Weapons, Bronzes, or Poliltical Symbolism....
