Antique Grand Tour Bronze Fat Lamp. Winged Griffin Handle, 19th Century
This is quite a wonderful Grand Tour item...a 19th Century example of an early "Fat Lamp", with a Candle Socket on one end, complete with its original Bobeche!! (usually these get lost over the decades), produced during the 1880-1890 timeframe, when Griffins were very popular!!
Cast in Bronze, with a very nice mellow Patina...the size is approx. 6.5" long x 3"diameter, and 2.5" high at the head of the Winged Griffin Handle....
And he is certainly quite a gorgeous Winged Griffin, in all his glory..holding down a Snake with his front paws and snarling with his tongue out...
The Center lid is decorated with winding leaves & flowers, and the head of a Woman...it lifts and provides a very nice hiding place for a precious jewel!!
A fabulous small Treasure from someone's Grand Tour to either Italy or France during the late 19th Century.
