This is a 19th Century Fur Trade Axe/Pipe, or "Tomahawk", with a Bronze Head and Mouth Piece, and a stained Wood Shaft with Leather wrapping at the Head. It appears to be a late Victorian Trade Axe as it shows good color, the Shaft or Handle looks correct with good Patina on the surface.

The dimensions are: approx. 18.5" total length....8.5" from edge of Axe Blade to tip of the Pipe Bowl. There is some evidence that there may have been some tacked decor at one time. The Leather wrap at the Head shows good age, and as you can see in the Photo, the pipe had been smoked !!

We are not Experts in this field, and did discover that there are many copies on the market, but feel this is correct, although probably a late 19th Century Trade item used for Fur bartering with Natives in the North Americas....

This Trade Axe has a "word of mouth" legend in that it was acquired from a Militaria Collector living in France, where it had been in his personal collection for over 25 years. He had acquired it from a French Canadian who moved to France and it had been in his family Collection. Being that Eastern Canada was a very active Fur Trading Region in the 19th Century, this sounds very plausible to us.

It is being offered for what it is, but we believe it to be a good Tomahawk-Trade Axe/Pipe....a nice addition for your collection....
