Here are two original and Antique "Stations of the Cross", Hand Painted in fine detail on Copper Panels, and framed by their original elaborately designed Neo-Gothic Oak Frames. CA.1870-1880
Station #1 is Jesus Christ condemned to Death by Pontius Pilate and led away....as Pontius washes his hands of the condemnation... Station #13 is Jesus being taken down from the Cross, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, with Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus holding his body...with the Hill of Golgotha and the Crosses in the background scenery....
The Frames measure approx. 19" x 10.5" and the painting panels measure approx. 11.5" x 8.5"
The images are very finely painted and have Gold highlights for the Halos. They are both mounted in their original Neo-gothic Oak Frames which are typical for this time frame of the Victorian Period, and present the paintings very nicely. The frames have some minor losses at the top spikes....the paintings themselves are in excellent condition.
There were only 2 paintings of the Stations in the estate where they were discovered. We believe they were painted in Northern Europe (possibly Germany,Holland or Belgium) where Copper Panels were often used for small well defined paintings.
These well executed and Sympathetic images of this historical setting will be a wonderful addition to your "Devotional Space" or your collection of Antique Religious items...the price is for the Pair.
