"Grand Tour" Bronze Figure of "Discobolus"(Discus Thrower), 19th Century
This is quite a fine 19th Century Bronze figure of "Discobolus" (the Discus Thrower in the Greek Olympics).
After a Life Size model located at the Vatican...the origins of this figure come from the 5th Century Greece. This example with excellent modeling of the musculature, and original dark Patina is a direct reduction from the Vatican figure, and is marked on the base "Musee du Vatican".
Most likely cast in Paris (given the French title)...these Grand Tour figures were exceptionally popular between 1850-1880's....many being cast by Barbedienne.
The size of this bronze is quite good....26.5" tall x 17"wide x 9"deep, and is quite heavy, so check with me for the shipping & insurance charges to your location.
A perfect example for your Classical Library or Office....
