This is a lovely small mourning brooch from the Victorian period. It is in pinchbeck metal with black enamel and a center glass pane (empty). It has an elaborate border with decorative detail and dates back to around 1870. The back is solid and has a standard pin, open C clasp, and T bar. Very good antique condition. This is a small piece measuring 1 x .75 inches. It was purchased in England.

Mourning jewelry is a unique genre of personal adornment worn to commemorate loved ones no longer with us. Queen Victoria made them popular after the death of Prince Albert. These pieces were created to commemorate the deceased and often carried deep emotional and symbolic meaning for those left behind. Mourning brooches also frequently incorporated hair and were pinned close to the heart.
