Here is a very special item for those of you who collect advertising pieces, or bar memoribilia. This windmill was intended to sit at the back of a bar or be in any establishment that sells liquor so that it could advertise mezcal made by Tonayan. We do not understand the significance of the windmill relative to mezcal or tequila, but because of its large size it certainly does attract attention. It had to have been hand-made which would certainly have been time consuming. It comes in three parts: the top which is the windmill, the middle section which is done using barrel stave construction, and the base upon which the barrel sits. It can be easily disassembled into these three parts for storage or shipping. It is made from solid wood. The top and the base are pine, but the barrel is quartersawn white oak. Decorative elements have been added with pyrography. On the barrel there is a logo that says "Mezcal Tonayan" scrolled above an agave plant. The overall condition of the piece is very good. Two of the five metal barrel bands are gone. That is hardly noticeable, however, because there are dark pyrographic bands that were originally located under the metal bands. As a result, the piece does not appear to be missing any of the bands. The staves are slightly loose, but if you wished to tighten the piece it could be filled with water which would expand the staves to make it tight again. There is a decorative spigot at the bottom of the barrel. The whole piece measures 14 3/4 inches tall and the windmill blades will add an additional 3 inches above the piece. Each blade is actually 4 3/8 inches long. The barrel is approximately 5 inches in diameter at the widest point. The base has a diameter of 7 3/4 inches. This is a very impressive item that is well made, in excellent condition, and will be an eye-popper for its next owner. What a great item for your man cave!
