We are offering a wonderful period piece from the Victorian era. This is a hand carved collapsible corner shelf that has been stained to a dark walnut color. These items were often made in small home industries in the mid-west. The piece features carved acanthus leaves/foliate patterns set into framed elements. It is 16 ½ inches long and the two “wings” are each 8 inches wide. Consequently when hung on a wall it will extend out about 8 inches in each direction from the corner. The actual shelf is a quarter circle with a radius of 7 5/8 inches. It is made so that the shelf can be unlatched from the back, it will then fold up against the left face and the right face will flip behind the left face. As a result, when folded it becomes totally flat. The condition is consistent with items of this type that have been used over the years. There are some splits in the wooden sides that have all been repaired long ago. The piece is totally solid, the hinges and latch function properly and are well seated, and you would need to look hard to see the repaired splits from the front. Somebody in more recent history has top-coated the piece with some semi-gloss varnish. Overall, it has a nice look, shows well, and is all ready to be used. It is the perfect item for the drawing room in your Victorian painted lady.
