If you are a collector of steamship memorabilia, then you will definitely want this very rare ticket wallet used to keep a persons papers and tickets in order when traveling to the New World. The wallet was distributed by the Friedrich Missler Company based out of Bremen, Germany. They primarily booked passage for people on the Nord Deutsche Lloyd Lines. A wallet similar to this one can be found in the Hoboken Historical Museum, since Hoboken was a primary dock used by Nord Deutsche Lloyd.
This item has definitely had heavy use. It is spotted, stained, has several holes, and the leather edging is loose for about 1 inch. On the two external covers there is a picture of the steamship Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. Inside there is advertising information for the Missler Company, all written in German. It says:
F. Missler, Bremen Bahnhofstrasse 30. (Which is the address) Passagier-Annahme (Office for receiving passengers) für die (for the) Schnelldampfer nach Amerika. (fast steamship to America) Bank und Geldwechsel. (bank and money exchange)
Unfolded, or open, it measures 7 1/4 inches by 8 1/4 inches. This is a real rarity and one can only imagine the stories in could tell about the time when immigrants were pouring into the U. S. from northern Europe. The condition speaks to the nature of the item showing that it was most probably a very important object for someone at one time and that it received heavy usage.
