We are offering a very nice folk art painted and carved picture frame that is decorated with a sunflower and leaves. The frame is painted in deep red transitioning to black while the sunflower is yellow with a reddish-black center. The frame measures a total of 11 inches tall by 6.25 inches wide. It will accommodate a picture that measures 3 inches by 5 inches. It appears to be made from a piece of barn board or wooden shingle. The front has been carefully carved, textured and painted. The back is raw wood. On the top of the front there is a carved name that looks as if it reads “JWONICZ.” On the back inscribed with fountain pen ink is the date 1957 along with some other text that I am unable to decipher. The text appears to be some version of an eastern European language. (An internet search shows that Iwonicz is a small town in southeastern Poland. This might be a homemade souvenir piece from that part of Poland.) On the back there is a folding leg that allows the frame to sit upright on a tabletop. The construction is well executed and aesthetically appealing. There is very minor chipping of some of the wood but no splits. The paint colors are muted but might have always been like that. It is a beautiful piece of folk art that is in very good condition and exhibits a nice quaint quality.
