We are offering two rare original issues of the"Southern Historical Society Papers", published in Richmond, Virginia by Reverend J. William Jones and dated April 1877 and January 1879 . The 1877 issue contains 10 different articles that relate to the Confederacy and its military efforts during the Civil War. The articles include an interesting piece about Garnett’s Brigade at Gettysburg and its role in Pickett’s Charge. There is also an article titled “Field Letters from Stuart’s Headquarters” and one titled “Cavalry Operations in May, 1863 – Report of General J. E. B. Stuart.” The January 1879 copy contains an extensive series of items about the Battle of Shiloh. There is also an article titled “Jackson’s Valley Campaign of 1862” and one titled “General Taliaferro’s Report of the Battle of Averasboro, North Carolina.” One of the more unique articles is a single page description of the ceremony that was held at the beginning of the construction of the Robert E. Lee mausoleum at Lexington, Virginia. Notable among the speakers at this occasion was Joseph Johnston. In both issues there are some nice period ads on the inside covers and back.

These issues were published on very cheap acidic newspaper stock that was not intended to last long. The fact that they have survived at all is quite remarkable. The covers are weak and friable, there are chips on the edges of the covers and pages and weakening of the spine. Still, considering the condition, these are excellent pieces to add to your collection of Civil War related materials. Both issues are protected in archival transparent display envelopes. There are lots of modern reprints of these papers available, but wouldn’t it be great to have an original copy! The covers measure 9.75 by 6 inches. There are a total of 228 pages in the 1877 copy and 52 pages in the 1879 copy. Remember, these are originals – not copies.
