This delightful piece is an early shoe last, or form, used by a cobbler to hand-make a shoe. Judging by the diminutive size of the piece it clearly had to be for making a child’s shoe. A bird and foliage has been painted on the piece along with several hearts. The painting is artistically done and adds a very appealing look to the piece. It is classic folk art. The shoe form measures 7 inches long, is 2 ¼ inches tall and is 2 3/8 inches wide. It is solid wood with the exception of the heel which is iron and has a piece of some sort of composite material at the ankle. When we obtained this piece it had been used to hold a candle. It would be a nice birthday treat from somebody, especially a youngster. The overall condition of the piece is very good, but it does have the dings and scrapes from a lifetime of usage. The painted decorations are in excellent condition with minimal damage or paint loss. This is a very nice display piece that is bound to provide much pleasure to the owner and bring many comments from guests. It would be a terrific gift. The two hearts painted on it make it a very nice love token or valentine.
