This wonderful little item would look great hanging on your wall in the kitchen or den. It is a match holder in the shape of a shovel with a pail, or bucket, attached to it. The piece is made from bronze or brass with parts of it being nickel plated. The shovel is 9 ¼ inches long and the blade of the shovel is 3 1/8 inches wide. The pail sticks out from the shovel about 1 inch. The pail has a bail handle that swings. In the lower right corner there is a corrugated metal striking surface for lighting matches. There are two hooks on either side of the pail. It is unclear for what they are intended. They might be there for looks alone. The shovel handle and the straps on the pail are nickel plated. Some of the nickel has rubbed off over the years. The piece is in condition that is consistent with age and use. There are some bends in the metal of the shovel blade and the front of the bucket has a dent. There are also several stains such as occur when the chemicals in match heads come in contact with metals. A layer of patina is across the whole piece. It is a neat little item that has lots of charm and looks terrific on display. It could certainly be used for its intended purpose.
