Pyrography (or wood burning), often referred to as Flemish Art, was a popular decorative style common in the early 1900's. It is frequently associated with the Arts and Crafts movement because of its simplicity and artistic qualities. We are offering a glove box with a hinged and latched lid that is decorated using pyrography with an wonderful red cherries and leaves motif that covers the lid and sides. The decorative elements are quite strong. The box measures 11 3/4 inches long, 2 5/8 inches tall, and 4 3/8 inches deep. The box is solid with no corner damage which is so common in boxes of this type. There are the usual small abrasions and wear marks that would be associated with an item that is this old, but they are minor in nature and do not detract from the look of the piece. The surface has accumulated some dirt and grime over the years. With a good cleaning it should enhance the color of the cherries and leaf designs. The hinges and the latch are original, in good condition and totally functional. On the underside of the box there is an original paper label that says “Pyro-Art-Wood Golde”. In addition, there is a birthday message on the bottom “E.S.D. C.E.D. Wishing you a happy birthday Aug. 10, 1910 “. On the inside lid it says “E.S.D. to E. C. D. Aug. 10, 1910". This is a nice box that is ready to be used and would add a decorative element to a shelf or table. The birthday greeting simply adds an additional quality to an already great item.
