Pyrography (or wood burning), often referred to as Flemish Art, was a popular decorative style common in the early 1900's. It is often associated with the Arts and Crafts movement because of its simplicity and artistic qualities. We are offering a collapsible book rack that has been beautifully executed both in terms of design and painting. The two ends fold down for easy storage. Using pyrography this piece has been carved with poppies and leaves on a textured surface. To emphasize the carving the poppies and leaves have been painted. It measures a total of 17 ½ inches long, 7 inches wide, and when the bookends stand upright is about 6 1/2 inches tall. The condition is quite good. The hinges are still well attached and there are no splits in the wood. There is the usual minor wear from rubbing along with a few small dings. As is commonly found with pieces such as this there is a very light protective coat of varnish on the surface that has kept the piece in good condition for all this time. The poppy was an important and commonly used motif in Arts and Crafts design. This piece fits that style perfectly. If you have an Arts and Crafts bungalow then you must have this book rack to display part of your antique book collection. You will not be disappointed!
