Pyrography (or wood burning), often referred to as Flemish Art, was a popular decorative form common in the early 1900's. It is often associated with the Arts and Crafts movement because of its simplicity and artistic qualities. We are offering a wonderful wooden tankard that has been beautifully made both in terms of design and execution. The piece stands a total of 11 5/8 inches tall and is 4 ½ inches in diameter at the round base. The handle sticks out about 2 1/8 inches from the edge of the tankard. At the top there is a hinged lid that is topped with a carved acorn. Around the sides of the piece pyrography has been used to burn in a nice design that consists of a gentleman's portrait along with some German script. The German text is "Wer nicht liebt wein, weib, und gesang, der bleibt ein narr, sein leben lang" and it translates as "Who does not love wine, woman, and song remains a fool and lives long." There is also a pyrographic illustration of a jovial looking gentleman with a goatee and moustache. Elsewhere the piece is decorated with a textured pyrographic design.

It is in excellent condition. It is clean and sound. The finish is still strong and the body is solid . Pieces like this often have the hinged lid detached or hardly hanging on. This lid is still solid as the day it was made. There appears to be a thin layer of varnish finish applied all over the decorated surfaces. There is one small area on one side where there appears to be some very minor spotting from paper or possibly an old label that stuck to the finish. Other than that, the tankard is as good as the day it was made. Finally, on the bottom it is signed "Flemish" with the inventory number 611.

This is a great piece of Flemish art that will be a wonderful addition to your collection and would look great sitting on a bookshelf. You can shop with confidence at Sweetpea Cottage.
