This glove box or handkerchief box with a hinged and latched lid is decorated using pyrography with a wonderful painted chrysanthemum and leaves motif that covers the lid and sides. The floral decorations are crisp and sharp and emphasized with very vibrant paint, definitely done by a master pyrographer. The background is a cross-hatched pyrographic texture that adds some nice interest to the piece. The box is quite long measuring 11 5/8 inches long, 2 ½ inches tall, and 4 1/8 inches deep. It is clean and structurally solid. There is a very minor separation that has developed at the right back corner joint. The separation is not complete and the joint is still very strong. There are the usual small abrasions and wear marks that would be associated with an item that is this old and has been used, but they are minor in nature and do not detract from the look of the piece. The hinges and the latch are original, in good condition and totally functional. On the underside of the box there is a stamp "PANOK". We have no idea what it means. This is a nice box that is ready to be used and would add a decorative touch to any shelf or table. The unusual yellow chrysanthemum design is rare and makes this box special. Pyrography (or wood burning), often referred to as Flemish Art, was a popular decorative style common in the early 1900's. It is frequently associated with the Arts and Crafts movement because of its simplicity and artistic qualities.
