Here is a neat little collection of five “time keeping booklets” from the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, or P & LE. This railroad was known as the “little giant” because of the massive amount of freight it hauled on its relatively short amount of track. Most of the business was devoted to serving the steel mills in the Pittsburgh-Youngstown area. The railroad closed in 1993 when the steel industry started to struggle. Each booklet is dated January 1912. They were to be used for keeping records of time spent on various jobs. Each booklet in the set belonged to a different individual, all of whom were plumbers for the railroad. Although they were only slightly used, with entries for January 1912, they are still an interesting reminder of the behind the scenes aspect of running a railroad back in the days when railroads were king. Each booklet measures 5 inches by 9 inches, is soft bound, and has a stapled binding that is reinforced with canvas. They all have 28 pages. They are in fine condition with the only problem being the normal yellowing of the paper which is a result of age. If you are a collector of railroadiana, then these are items that you should add to your collection.
