This is a wonderful piece of ephemera with Civil War ties. Published as an advertisement for Norfolk, Virginia, it appeals to members of the GAR, or Grand Army of the Republic. Its intent is to sell old Civil War vets on the idea of moving to Norfolk because of its many attributes. It also includes information about an excursion to Fortress Monroe which was a Union stronghold that played a significant role in much of the action seen in the Richmond area during the war. It includes points of interest in the Norfolk area along with “Facts and Figures Concerning Norfolk” and an ad for the Norfolk & Southern Railroad.
The document was originally folded as a pamphlet. However, over the years it has been stored open and flat. It measures 6 inches by 9 inches and is printed on both sides. Considering its age it is in surprisingly good condition. The paper is yellowed, has some foxing, and some weakness along the early folds. There is a very minor separation at the point of the centerfold and a 1/8th inch separation on an edge at another fold point. The printing is still strong and easily readable. It is presently in an archival sleeve and needs to be left in the sleeve due to its fragile nature or it should be archivally framed. It would look wonderful with archival framing done so that both sides are visible. Considering that this piece was never intended to have survived this long, it is an terrific survivor.
